Hafursey was used by the farmers for sheep grazing all year around during summers until 1854. The Sel (a natural cave used for shelter) inside is one of the best-preserved remnants in the history of Iceland. In 1755, when Katla erupted, six men took shelter in the cave during the glacier burst. Their signatures, plus the date and year of their stay there, are written on the wall and are clearly visible as you enter the cave. Yet what makes Hafursey such a unique location is also the sublime diversity of wild, extraterrestrial landscapes that compose the area. The lonely Inselberg is surrounded by vast valleys of volcanic sand, sanders, glaciers, and waterfalls that render one of the most special, almost lunar sceneries in the world.☞ About Hafursey (Yfir)« Yfir » ("Above") is a musical journey through Iceland's various moods and seasons. At times, the music swells with a powerful surge, mirroring the crashing waves against rocky cliffs or the thunderous roar of a distant volcano. Other moments evoke a sense of stillness and serenity, echoing the peacefulness found in secluded valleys and hidden fjords near the inselberg of Hafursey.The song is the continuation of another track written by Ólafur, Undir: “We’ve been playing Undir for 5 years, and rearranged it every time for each set, changing every element one by one. Last year, we realized the latest version of Undir was not the same track that the one we originally composed! One evening, a few years ago in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, the PFC crew and I were waiting for an 80-year-old cuica player to perform on a Song Around The World. I remember it seemed to take forever for him to make it down the hill, as he would stop off in every bar along the way for a drink and some conversation. As we waited I looked and saw a Rastaman walking across the street with his acoustic guitar in hand. I waved to him and he came over to see what we were doing with all our equipment. I told him about Playing For Change and he agreed to play a song for us while we were waiting. The result was an incredible, spontaneous performance of Dennis Brown’s “Rasta Children.” His voice reminded me of Peter Tosh and he sang with so much soul that we realized this could be an amazing Song Around The World. Just one man and his guitar playing on the street set the tone for this song and we added a worldwide band of roots musicians around him. “I and I deal with humanity…”

On ‘Appalachia’, enigmatic duo Sean Kratz (vocals, guitars, synths) and Kakophonix (cello) take us further into the unique landscapes that have been explored by Osi and the Jupiter since their formation in 2015. This time, they draw upon the surroundings of their homelands in eastern Ohio to weave dedications to the Appalachian region to which the title of this three-track EP is dedicated.

In honour of this more personal wellspring of inspiration, Osi and the Jupiter’s sound has evolved from the ambient soundscapes of yore into more direct expressions of yearning. Voice, ambient synth drones, acoustic guitar and cello underpin these delicate homage’s to a mysterious, myth-laden region. Kratz’s heartfelt, plaintive vocals speak openly of surroundings that clearly resonate deep within. Gentle strummed melodies support these tales, whilst the ever-inventive cello melodies of Kakophonix reach onwards to distant places as yet unseen.

‘They Ride Through the Sky on Horse Drawn Chariots’ sets the tone with dramatic swells, leading the listener by the hand into these new realms. ‘Appalachia‘ follows, replete with yearning vocals and delicate, countrified picking. ‘The Binding Will of Mountains’ closes this unique collection of songs with a twelve-minute journey throughout the myriad soundscapes.
